Lake Balkhash is a huge body of water in southeastern Kazakhstan.

It sits in the eastern part of Central Asia. This lake is very important because it is one of the largest in Asia. In fact, it is the 15th largest lake in the whole world. It rests inside a large, closed area called the Balkhash-Alakol Basin. This basin is a low area surrounded by mountains.

Because the basin is closed, no rivers flow out of the lake. All the water that enters stays there.

Many rivers bring water to the lake from different places. The Ili River is the most important one. It brings about 73 to 80 percent of the water. This river starts in the mountains of the Xinjiang region in China. Most of its water comes from melting snow in the spring.

Other rivers like the Karatal and Aksu also flow into the lake. The Karatal is the second largest source of water. The lake also gets some water from deep underground. This constant flow of rivers keeps the lake filled.

The lake is actually two different lakes joined together. A long piece of land called the Saryesik Peninsula sits in the middle.

This peninsula divides the water into a western and eastern half. They are connected by a narrow path called the Uzynaral Strait. The western side is shallow and filled with fresh water. It covers about 58 percent of the surface area. The eastern side is much deeper and much saltier. The water there can look bluish or even emerald-blue.

History tells us that this area has changed many times. The name Balkhash comes from old words meaning "tussocks in a swamp." Long ago, the area was home to nomadic Turks and Mongols. They mixed their cultures with people who lived in settled towns. In the year 1864, the area became part of the Russian Empire. Later, after the Soviet Union ended in 1991, it became part of Kazakhstan.

The lake has always been a vital place for the people living nearby.

Today, people use the lake for many different jobs. The city of Balkhash is the largest town on the shore. It has about 66,000 people living there. Many people work in fishing or mining.

You can even see large mining plants near the water.

However, the lake is currently shrinking. This happens because water is taken from the rivers for industry and farms. Changing weather and dry climates also make the lake smaller. This is a big concern for the future of the lake.
