The name Qinghai can mean "Blue Sea" or "Green Sea." This is because the old Chinese name used one word for both colors. In the past, some people even called it the "Western Sea." This was to balance the East China Sea.

The lake is an alkaline salt lake. This means the water is salty and has a high pH of 9.3. The salt level is about 1.4% by weight. This happens because water flows in but then evaporates into the air.

Twenty-three rivers and streams flow into the lake. Most of these streams only flow during certain seasons. Only five permanent streams provide most of the water. The lake's size changes quite a lot over time. It shrank for much of the 1900s but has grown since 2004.

History shows many different people have lived near the water. During the Han dynasty, many people lived in the valley to the east. In the 1600s, Mongol tribes moved to the area. They became known as the Qinghai Mongols. Later, the Qing dynasty took direct control of the region. In the 1900s, different groups like the Hui lived there too. Some leaders even held special ceremonies to worship the God of the Lake.

There are many interesting facts about the lake's size and nature. In 2008, the lake had a maximum depth of 32 meters.

The water is home to five types of native fish. One common fish is called the naked carp. The lake is also a very important spot for birds. Many birds use the lake as a stop on their long flights across Asia. Two islands, known as the Bird Islands, are safe places for these animals.

People still visit the lake for many reasons today. Tibetan Buddhists often walk or ride horses around the entire lake. This trip can take about 18 days on horseback. Some people say it takes 23 days if you walk. There is also a famous island with a Buddhist monastery. In the winter, the lake stays frozen for three months. This makes it a very different place to visit depending on the season.
