The water is salty and alkaline. This happens because the sun dries the water away. This leaves the salt behind. Many rivers flow into the lake. Most of these rivers only flow in certain seasons.

Many birds stop at the lake during their long flights. They use it as a place to rest while moving across Asia. There are also islands in the lake. Two of these are called the Bird Islands. They are safe places for nature.

The weather can be very cold. In the winter, the lake stays frozen for three months. In the summer, the afternoons are pleasant. But the mornings are often cold. Some people walk or ride horses around the lake. It is a very big trip. It can take many days to finish the circle.
