Lake Baikal is a very special place in Russia.

It is the deepest lake on Earth. The water can reach 1,642 meters deep. It is also the oldest lake. Scientists think it is 25 to 30 million years old. Because it is so deep, it holds a huge amount of water. It has 22 to 23 percent of the world's fresh surface water. This is more than all the Great Lakes in North America combined.

The lake sits in a rift valley. This is a place where the Earth's crust pulls apart. This movement makes the valley wider by 4 mm every year. The water is very clear. In the winter, the surface freezes for about 4 to 5 months. The ice can be very thick.

Many plants and animals live here. Many of them are endemic. This means they are found nowhere else on Earth. The Baikal seal, or nerpa, lives in the lake.

There are also many fish. The omul is a whitefish that lives there. Local people catch and sell it.
