The name Tahoe comes from the Washo people. It means "the lake" in their language. The lake was made about two million years ago. During the ice ages, glaciers carved the land. These glaciers made famous spots like Emerald Bay.

Water comes to the lake in two ways. Some water comes from rain and snow. Other water comes from 63 small streams. These streams are called tributaries.

One river, the Truckee River, is the only way water leaves the lake. A dam helps control how much water flows out. In the winter, the area gets a lot of snow. This snow melts in the spring to fill the lake. Many people visit to ski or hike in the summer.
