The lake is under a thick ice sheet. The ice is very heavy. This weight creates high pressure. The pressure helps keep the water liquid. This is true even when it is very cold. The water is also very dark because no sunlight reaches it.

Scientists used many ways to find the lake. They used sound to measure the ice. They also used a satellite to look from space. In 1993, they finally confirmed the lake was there.

Some tiny living things might live in the water. These are called microbes. Scientists found microbes in ice near the lake. This suggests life might exist in the dark. The lake may be like oceans on icy moons in space.

Teams drill deep holes to study the ice. They take out long tubes of ice. These are called ice cores. These cores can be 420,000 years old. They help us learn about the past.
