Antarctica is a giant land at the bottom of the world.

It sits in the Southern Hemisphere near the South Pole. The land is surrounded by many oceans. These include the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.

Most of Antarctica is covered by ice. This ice sheet is the largest in the world. It holds 90 percent of all the ice on Earth. It also holds 70 percent of the world's fresh water. The ice is so heavy that it pushes the ground down. Some parts of the land sit below sea level.

High mountains divide the land into two parts. These are the Transantarctic Mountains. They separate West Antarctica from East Antarctica.

There are also many volcanoes here. Some are easy to see, like Mount Erebus. Others hide deep under the ice. Scientists found 91 new volcanoes under the ice in 2017. These hidden volcanoes might make the ice melt. This could cause sea levels to rise.

Deep canyons also hide under the snow. We cannot see them from the surface.
