It makes up two-thirds of the land. The Transantarctic Mountains split it from West Antarctica.

Most of this land is in the Eastern Hemisphere. The South Pole is also located here.

This place is very high and very cold. It is the coldest place on Earth. Most of the land is under thick, permanent ice. Deep under the ice, there is a mountain range. We call these the Gamburtsev Mountains. They are about the size of the European Alps.

Very few things live on the ice. There are no trees or shrubs. Only moss, algae, and lichens grow on rocks. These plants can live in the cold wind.

Near the coast, many animals live. Emperor penguins breed in the dark winter. Many seals live on the ice too. You might see a leopard seal or an elephant seal. These animals feed in the ocean nearby.
