This land is very cold and windy. Most of it is covered by a thick ice sheet. This ice is 1.9 km thick on average. Antarctica is a polar desert. This means it is very dry. It holds 70% of the world's freshwater. This water is all frozen in the ice.

You can find many animals here. Penguins and seals live in the area. Small plants like moss and lichen grow too. There are also many volcanoes. One active volcano is Mount Erebus. It sits on Ross Island.

Many countries help look after Antarctica. They follow a special rule called the Antarctic Treaty. This rule stops mining and war. Most people go there for research. They live in special stations. About 5,000 people stay there in summer. Only 1,000 people stay in winter. It is a very important place to study.
