Adélie Land

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Adélie Land is a part of Antarctica. France claims this land. It sits by the Southern Ocean. The land goes from the coast all the way to the South Pole. It is a very cold place. Most of the land is covered in glaciers, which are large sheets of ice.

The coast is very windy. These are called katabatic winds. They push snow and ice away from the shore. Some people say it is the stormiest spot on Earth.

Many animals live here. You might see seals or emperor penguins. There are also many Adélie penguins.

These penguins need rocky ground to build nests. Sometimes, too much sea ice makes it hard for them to find food.

Scientists visit to study the land. They stay at research stations. The Dumont d'Urville Station is a large base. It sits on Petrel Island. It is five kilometres from the mainland. Scientists there study things like biology and weather. Other bases, like Cap Prud'Homme, help move supplies across the ice.
