Life on the island is hard. The weather is cold and snowy. There are no trees here. Many animals call the island home. You might see king penguins or seals. Some birds, like the South Georgia pipit, live only here.

People have visited the island for a long time. In 1775, Captain James Cook mapped the land. Later, people came to hunt seals and whales. One famous place was Grytviken. Today, very few people live there. About 20 people stay at King Edward Point. This is a research station. It is part of a British territory. The island also sees large icebergs. Some icebergs are as big as the island itself!
