The islands have a cold climate. There are mountain ranges on both main islands. Many birds live there.

Some birds do not nest on the main islands anymore. This is because of animals brought there by people.

Most people live in the capital town. Its name is Stanley.

People there speak English. They do many jobs to earn money. Some people farm sheep for wool. Others work in fishing or tourism.

The islands are a British Overseas Territory. This means the United Kingdom helps with defense. But there is a long dispute. Argentina also claims the islands. In 1982, there was a war between them. Later, a vote showed most people want to stay with the UK.
