Most of the islands are covered in ice. Between 80 and 90 percent of the land has glaciers. It is a very cold and windy place. The sea is often closed by ice.

Some parts of the islands are volcanoes. One famous place is Deception Island. It has warm volcanic baths.

Life here is tough but special. Moss, algae, and lichens grow on the land. Many animals live in the cold water. You can find penguins, seabirds, and big elephant seals. One tiny flying insect lives there too.

Many countries keep research stations on the islands. They study the land and the ice. Most stations are on King George Island.
