The Strait of Magellan is a sea route in southern Chile.

It sits between mainland South America and the islands to the south. This path is a way to sail between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is shorter than the open sea route near Cape Horn. However, the winds and currents can be very hard to use.

A man named Ferdinand Magellan found this path in 1520. He led a group of five ships for the King of Spain.

One of his ships was named the Victoria. Long ago, many groups of people lived near the water. They were nomadic hunter-gatherers. This means they moved to find food. Some groups lived on the coast. They fished and gathered shellfish. Other groups lived in the hills.

In the past, the strait was one of the few ways to move between oceans. This changed when the Panama Canal was built. Today, ships must use a guide to sail safely through the narrows.
