South Georgia is a rugged island in the South Atlantic Ocean.

It sits east of the Falkland Islands. The island is part of a British territory. Its land is very mountainous and steep. A large ridge runs through the middle of the island. The highest point is a peak called Mount Paget. The northern coast is filled with many bays and fjords. These deep inlets of the sea make good places for ships to rest.

The weather on the island is very cold. It has a polar tundra climate. This means it is often freezing and windy. There are no trees growing on the island. During the winter months, snow usually covers the ground. The island also sits in the path of huge icebergs. These giant pieces of ice drift north from Antarctica. One iceberg in 2020 was almost as big as the island itself!

People have a long history with this remote place. Europeans first found the island in 1675. A merchant named Anthony de la Roché may have seen it then. Later, Captain James Cook landed there to map the land. He named it the "Isle of Georgia" in 1775. For many years, people used the island to hunt seals and whales. They built bases like the one at Grytviken.

You can still see old ruins from those times.

Many animals live on South Georgia. It is a busy home for king penguins and seals. Some animals, like the South Georgia pipit, live only on this island. There are also 25 kinds of native plants. In the past, reindeer lived here because whalers brought them. However, they were hurting the plants. In 2013, workers removed all 3,500 reindeer to help the island.

This helps the native birds and plants grow again.

Today, very few people call the island home. The main place where people stay is King Edward Point. This is a research station for the British Antarctic Survey. Only about 20 people live there now. The island is a very special place for science and nature. It shows how life survives in a harsh, icy world. Exploring its history and its animals is a big adventure.
