It sits near the coast of Antarctica in the South Shetland Islands. The island is located north-northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is also west-southwest of South Georgia and south of the Falkland Islands. This mountainous land is part of the South Scotia Ridge. Many different countries claim this area, including Argentina, Chile, and the United Kingdom.

The island is a very rugged and windy place. It is mostly covered in ice and has many high peaks. The highest point is called Mount Pendragon. The weather is often foggy and brings a lot of snow. Strong winds can blow across the landscape. The main glacier on the island is the Endurance Glacier.

People first discovered this island in 1821. A Russian expedition led by Fabian von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev found it. They named it Mordvinov Island to honor a person. Captain George Powell also saw it early on. He thought the island looked like an elephant's head. He also saw elephant seals there, which is how it got its English name.

Many animals visit the island during warmer times. Thousands of chinstrap, gentoo, and macaroni penguins come here to mate and breed.

You can also find Antarctic fur seals and leopard seals in the water. Large whales like blue, fin, and humpback whales swim nearby. However, the island has no plants or animals that live on the land all year. It is a very barren place for life.

Elephant Island is famous because of the explorer Ernest Shackleton. In 1916, his ship, the Endurance, was lost in the ice. Shackleton and 27 men reached the island after a very hard journey. They stayed at a place called Point Wild. They built a small shack using parts of their lifeboats to stay safe.
