Deception Island is a very special place in the South Shetland Islands.

It sits near the Antarctic Peninsula in a cold, icy region. The island is actually the top of an active shield volcano.

It is shaped like a large ring or a horseshoe. This shape was made when the volcano collapsed a long time ago. Scientists call this empty ring a caldera. The island is about 30 km wide. It has high peaks like Mount Pond and Mount Kirkwood.

More than half of the island is covered by thick glaciers.

The island works like a giant natural harbor. The sea flows through a narrow opening called Neptune's Bellows.

This water fills the center of the ring to make Port Foster. The bay is a large basin with a flat floor. It is a safe place for ships to hide from wind and ice. The coast has sandy beaches and steep cliffs of rock or ice. Some parts of the island have hot springs and volcanic ash.

These features come from the volcano underneath the ground. The volcano can still cause tremors or small shakes.

People have a long history of visiting this island. An American sealer named Nathaniel Palmer found it in 1820.

He gave it its name because it looked like a normal island. He did not realize it was a ring until he saw the narrow entrance. Later, many people came to the island to hunt seals. This industry did not last long because the seals were hunted too much. By 1825, the sealing industry had almost completely ended.

In the early 1900s, a new kind of work began on the island. People came to hunt whales at Whalers Bay.

They built a station on the shore to process the whales. This was the only successful shore-based whaling industry in Antarctica. They built things like a radio station and a small railway.

There was even a cemetery for the workers. This busy time ended in 1931 when the factory stopped working.

Today, Deception Island is used for science and travel.

More than 15,000 visitors come to see it every year. Argentina and Spain run research stations there during the summer.

The island is managed under the Antarctic Treaty System. This means no single country owns or controls the land. Scientists study the volcano and the animals that live nearby. They want to learn how volcanic eruptions affect life in the cold.
