The bay is a very lively place for these living things.

History began here in January 1902. A Swedish group called the Swedish Antarctic Expedition found the bay. They were led by Otto Nordenskiöld. He named the bay to honor his team members. They had to spend a winter there after their ship was lost in the ice. You can still see the ruins of their stone hut today.

Many different countries use the bay for research. Esperanza Base is a permanent station run by Argentina. It stays open all year long. About 55 people live there during the winter months. There is also a summer station from Uruguay called ECARE.

There are many interesting sights to see around the water. Arena Glacier flows into the bay from the west. Its flat ice floor looks like a sports arena.
