It sits in the Antarctic. This body of water separates the Joinville Island group from the Antarctic Peninsula. The Joinville group includes D'Urville Island, Joinville Island, Dundee Island, and Bransfield Island. The sound is about 56 km long. It is also between 13 and 22 km wide.

This place can be very hard to travel through. Large icebergs often clog the water. Many of these are tabular icebergs from the Larsen Ice Shelf.

These icebergs make the sound deceptive for ships. In 1920, a vessel could not reach Hope Bay. Later, a group called Operation Tabarin had similar problems. It is a tricky path for any boat to take.

Explorers first sailed here a long time ago. In 1902, the ship Antarctic navigated the sound. It was part of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition. Otto Nordenskjöld led this expedition. The ship was under the command of Carl Anton Larsen.

One year later, the ice trapped and crushed the ship. The crew had to spend the winter at Hope Bay.

Many different animals live in these waters and on the land.

Hope Bay is a very important area for birds. You can see gentoo penguins and Adélie penguins there. There are also brown skuas and Antarctic terns. Trepassey Bay is home to snow petrels and kelp gulls. In the water, leopard seals hunt while Weddell seals rest on the beach.

Today, people still visit this remote part of the world. Since 1998, cruise ships have traveled to the area. People also go there to study the environment. Hope Bay once had a British base. Now, there is a permanent Argentinian station there. It is called Esperanza Base.
