The weather here is a tropical monsoon. This means there are wet and dry seasons. It can get very hot during the wet season from October to March. In the dry season, the nights can feel quite cool.

This place holds some of the oldest stories on Earth. Humans have lived in this region for about 60,000 years. This makes the Aboriginal culture here one of the oldest living cultures. Scientists have found a stone axe here that is 35,500 years old.

People have passed down stories through many generations. They also leave beautiful art on rocks. This art shows that their culture has stayed strong for a very long time.

Long ago, people from a place called Makassar visited these shores.

They arrived in wooden sailboats called praus. These traders came to collect sea cucumbers from the ocean. They traded things like cloth, rice, and knives with the local people. This was the first time people from Australia met neighbors from Asia. This contact changed many things for the local Aboriginal groups. It even introduced new words that people still use today.

Many different Aboriginal groups call this land home. The Yolngu people live in the north-east part of the region. They have a very strong traditional culture. Some people live in larger towns like Nhulunbuy or Maningrida. Other people live in small groups on their traditional homelands.

These small groups often move to stay close to their ancestral lands. This helps them keep their way of life.

Today, Arnhem Land is a place of both old and new things. Many people work in bauxite mining, which helps the local economy.
