Adelaide Island is a large island in Antarctica. It is long and wide and mostly covered in ice. The island sits on the north side of Marguerite Bay. This area is off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.

You can find the Ginger Islands near its southern end. The island sits within lands claimed by Argentina, Chile, and the United Kingdom. It is a place of many mountains and icy coasts. Mount Bodys is the mountain furthest to the east. It rises to a height of over 1,220 meters.

The island has a very interesting ground under the ice. Long ago, the Antarctic Peninsula was a place with active volcanoes. This created many layers of rock on the island. The oldest rocks are from the Late Jurassic period. These are called the Buchia Buttress Formation. They include volcanic rocks and sandstones.

Other rocks, like the Milestone Bluff Formation, show where the sea was once shallow. There are also volcanic layers like the Bond Nunatak Formation. These layers tell a story of how the land changed over millions of years.

Explorers have been visiting this island for a long time. A British explorer named John Biscoe discovered it in 1832. He named the island for Queen Adelaide of the United Kingdom. Later, a French expedition led by Jean-Baptiste Charcot surveyed the area. They explored it between 1908 and 1910. Charcot named several places on the island. For example, he named Cape Mascart after a French physicist. He also named Cape Alexandra for a Queen of the United Kingdom.

Today, people use the island to do important science work. There is a busy place called the Rothera Research Station.

There is also an older base known as Base T. The British used this base for a long time. Later, it was given to Chile in 1984. They renamed it the Teniente Luis Carvajal Villaroel Antarctic Base. Now, the ground near the old base is not very stable. This makes it hard for the Chilean Air Force to land planes there. However, the Chilean Navy still visits the station every summer.

Many different parts of the island have special names. Mackay Point is a tiny peninsula on the eastern side. It sticks out into the Laubeuf Fjord.

On the southeast coast, you will find the wide Ryder Bay. The Leonie Islands sit across the mouth of this bay. Rothera Point marks the east side of Ryder Bay. This point is a protected area for biological research. Scientists use it to study how the environment stays healthy. This helps them learn more about the life in Antarctica.
