It sits in the south-west corner of the island of Saint Vincent. The city is part of the Saint George parish. High and steep hills rise up all around the town. Kingstown has a large main port for ships. It is the biggest center for trade in the islands. Many tourists use this port to enter the country. The city is also a main center for farming.

Many things have shaped the city over many years. In 1765, people started a botanical garden there. This garden is one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. A man named William Bligh once brought breadfruit seeds to plant there. Later, a large fire destroyed many parts of the town in 1866. This event led to new plans for a water supply. Those plans were finally finished in 1871. These steps helped the city grow and change.

History shows that many different people have lived in Kingstown. French settlers founded the city shortly after the year 1722. Even so, Saint Vincent was under British rule for 196 years. The city has seen many different times of peace and trouble. In 1795, rebels took a fort at Dorsetshire Hill. This fort sits just outside the city. In 1841, a riot happened after some militia men were arrested. About 200 to 300 people took part in that riot.

The number of people living in the city has shifted. In 1825, there were about 3,000 people living there. By 1861, the population had grown to 5,101 people. This growth happened even during times of sickness like cholera. In 1970, the population was much higher at 17,117 people. By 2012, the number of people was 12,909. Between 1980 and 1991, the city population went down by 7.81 percent. However, the suburbs grew by 25.56 percent during that same time.

Today, Kingstown is a place that is changing again. In 2025, a leader named Camillo Gonsalves made an announcement. He said the government wants to rename some areas of the country. This is part of a project called decolonization. Kingstown is one of the areas that might get a new name. It remains a very important part of the islands. It connects the people of Saint Vincent to the rest of the world.
