geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Tórshavn is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands.

It sits on the east coast of the island of Streymoy. To the northwest of the city, you can see the mountain Húsareyn. To the southwest, the mountain Kirkjubøreyn stands tall. The Sandá River flows right between these two mountains. The city is a busy place with many people. About 14,223 people live in the city itself. If you include the suburbs like Hoyvík and Argir, the number grows to 22,444.

The history of this place goes back a very long time. Norse settlers arrived in the 9th century. They held meetings called tings in different parts of the islands. They liked to meet in neutral, empty places. Some say the main meeting was in Tórshavn in AD 825. This happened on the Tinganes peninsula. This narrow piece of land divides the harbour into two parts. These parts are called Eystaravág and Vestaravág.

For many years, Tórshavn was a very important place for trade. It was the only legal place for islanders to buy and sell goods. In 1271, the Norwegian Crown set up a royal trade monopoly here. This meant ships from Bergen brought salt, timber, and cereal to the town. Because of this, Tórshavn had more contact with the outside world than other villages. A small fort called Skansin was built to help protect the harbour.

Life in the town has changed through many hard and good times. In 1673, a fire destroyed many old houses at Tinganes. This happened after a store of gunpowder blew up. Later, in 1709, a smallpox plague killed many people in the town. However, the town began to grow again in the late 1700s. In 1856, the trade monopoly ended and free trade began. This change helped the economy grow and made Tórshavn a central hub.

You can also find handball, rowing, and cycling in the area. The weather is often cloudy and stormy due to the Atlantic Ocean. But the ocean keeps the water from freezing in the winter. This makes the winters much milder than other cold places far north.
