Tórshavn

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Tórshavn is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands.

It is located on the east coast of the island of Streymoy. To the northwest of the city lies the mountain Húsareyn. To the southwest, you can find the mountain Kirkjubøreyn. The Sandá River flows between these two mountains. The city has a population of 14,223 people as of 2024. The greater urban area is larger, with 22,444 people. This area includes the suburbs of Hoyvík and Argir.

The city's history is tied to the Tinganes peninsula. This narrow piece of land divides the harbour into two sections. These sections are named Eystaravág and Vestaravág.

Norse settlers arrived in the 9th century. They established parliaments known as tings. These meetings were often held in neutral, uninhabited places. Some romantic accounts suggest the main ting met at Tinganes in AD 825. The Færeyinga Saga notes that the ting was on Streymoy near the harbour. This meeting place eventually grew into a permanent trading area.

Trade has always been a central part of Tórshavn. In 1271, the Norwegian Crown established a royal trade monopoly.

This meant Tórshavn was the only legal place to buy and sell goods. Two ships would sail regularly from Bergen to the town. They brought essential supplies like salt, timber, and cereal. This gave Tórshavn more contact with the outside world than other villages. The town developed because it was both a trading hub and the seat of the ting.

The town has faced many challenges over the centuries. In 1584, the population was only 101 people. The people were divided into three main groups. These were farmers, trade officials, and the landless proletariat. In 1673, a gunpowder explosion at Tinganes caused a massive fire. Many old houses and important records were lost. Later, in 1709, a smallpox plague struck the town. The population dropped from 300 to only 50 people.

Economic changes helped the city grow in later years. The trade monopoly was managed by the von Gabel family from 1655 to 1709. This period, called Gablatíðin, was a difficult time for the islanders. Conditions improved when the monopoly became a royal one in 1709. In the late 18th century, Niels Ryberg managed the trade. He experimented with salted cod and herring. He was the first to seek profit from fishing. This later became the most important part of the islands' economy. In 1856, the monopoly was finally abolished in favor of free trade.

Today, Tórshavn is the center of government and sport. The Løgting is the parliament of the Faroe Islands. It moved from Tinganes to the town square, Vaglið, in 1856.

The city also hosts the largest sports facilities. The Torsvøllur football stadium can seat 6,000 spectators.

It is the home of the national football team. Other popular activities include handball and rowing. The Tórshavn Jazz Festival has also been held annually since 1983.

The climate in Tórshavn is a subpolar oceanic climate. The Atlantic Ocean's Norwegian Current keeps the area moderate. This prevents the water from freezing in the winter.

Winter temperatures are mild for such a northern location. However, summers are much cooler than in Scandinavia. The weather is often overcast and stormy due to the Icelandic Low. Rainfall is highest in autumn and winter, peaking in January. Despite the storms, the mountains help protect the area from western winds.
