geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Tórshavn is the capital city of the Faroe Islands.

It sits on the east coast of Streymoy. This is the largest island in the group. Near the city, two mountains stand tall. The Sandá River flows between them.

This city has a very long history. Viking settlers arrived in the 9th century. They met on a piece of land called Tinganes. This place was a parliament, or a group that makes rules.

For a long time, Tórshavn was the only place for trade. People had to buy and sell goods here. This helped the town grow. A small fort called Skansin was built to protect the harbor.
