Long ago, Nidaros was a capital city. It was the home of Norway's first Christian kings. A leader named Olaf Trygvesson founded the place in 997. He built a church and a large estate there.

The Nidaros Cathedral is a very famous building. It was built in a style called Romanesque. Later, leaders made it larger in a style called ogival. The church held the tomb of Saint Olaf. He was a patron saint of Norway. Many people went on long trips to visit him. These trips are called pilgrimages. The shrine was the most important site in Northern Europe.

In 1537, things changed for the city. The old church ways were replaced by Lutheran ways. The city's name changed back to Trondheim. However, the name Nidaros was used again for a short time in 1930. Today, people still walk old paths to the cathedral. This path is called Saint Olav's Way.
