These people were Vikings. Most came from Norway. They were Norse settlers. They moved into many parts of Scotland.

They took over the Northern Isles first. These are Orkney and Shetland. They also lived in the Hebrides. These are the islands to the west. They held lands on the mainland too.

Vikings changed the land. They gave new Norse names to many places. They also mixed with local people. This created a new culture. It joined Norse and Gaelic ways of life.

We learn about them from old stories. One famous book is the Orkneyinga saga.

It tells of the rulers in Orkney. We also use tools from the ground to learn. Archaeology helps us see how they lived.

Over time, things changed. Scottish rule grew stronger. In 1231, the Norse leaders in Orkney ended. Later, the Norwegian crown gave the islands to Scotland. By the mid-15th century, the Norse era in Scotland was over.
