It has a population of 19,245 people. The biggest town there is Kirkwall.

Shetland has 16 inhabited islands. These islands are more rugged and rocky. The capital is Lerwick. It has about 7,500 people. Many people in Shetland work in fishing. They also work with oil from the sea.

The weather is cool and steady. The sea and the Gulf Stream help keep it mild. It is often very windy. In summer, the sun stays up for a long time. This is called the simmer dim.
