Long ago, this place was a very important capital city. It was the home of Norway's very first Christian kings. The name Nidaros comes from the river's mouth. This location helped it become a central hub for the whole country. It stayed a spiritual center for a long time.

Building the city was a step-by-step journey through history. A leader named Olaf Trygvesson founded Nidaros in the year 997. He built a church and a large estate there. Later, Olaf Haraldsson made it a formal religious center. He brought in a monk named Grimkill to be the first bishop. For a while, the local bishops had to follow leaders in Hamburg and Lund. Eventually, the Pope sent Nicholas Breakspeare to make Nidaros an archdiocese in 1152.

The Nidaros Cathedral is the most famous part of the city. King Olaf Kyrre began building it in the Romanesque style. Later, Archbishop Eystein made the building much larger using the ogival style. Archbishop Sigurd Sim finished the work in 1248. Even though fires damaged the stone walls, people fixed it every time. Today, you can still see the beautiful building against the blue sky.

Many people traveled great distances to visit this special place. They came on long journeys called pilgrimages to see the shrine of Saint Olaf. He was known as the patron saint and perpetual king of Norway. His tomb was located inside the great cathedral. On July 29, people from many nations would gather for his feast day. This included people from Sweden, Denmark, and even the Slavic lands. It was a huge event for everyone in the North.

Things changed a lot in the year 1537 during the Reformation. The old religious ways were replaced by Lutheran ways. Archbishop Olaf Engelbrektsson had to flee because of King Christian III. Some precious items, like the reliquaries, were taken away to Copenhagen. The city's name went back to Trondheim for many years. However, people recently started walking the old paths again. This famous route is called Saint Olav's Way.
