It is a very special place in the ocean.

The land here is very interesting to look at. It has a rugged coastline with many rocky edges. You will see many low, rolling hills across the islands.

The weather is moderate because of the surrounding sea. Winters are long and mild. Summers are short and cool.

The islands have complex geology with many different rocks.

People have lived in Shetland for a very long time. Humans arrived during the Mesolithic period. Later, people from the Norse culture arrived in the 8th and 9th centuries.

For a long time, Shetland was part of Norway. In 1468, King Christian I pledged the islands to Scotland. This was to pay for a marriage dowry.

Eventually, the Scottish Parliament took full control in 1472. This long history changed how the islands grew.

There are about 100 islands in the group. Only 16 of these islands have people living on them.

Life in Shetland is linked to the sea and the past. Fishing has always been a big part of the economy. In the 1970s, finding North Sea oil helped a lot too.
