People sometimes call them the Western Isles or the Long Island. This group of islands sits off the west coast of mainland Scotland. They are separated from the mainland by the waters of the Minch.

The islands are part of the Hebrides archipelago. They are the longest archipelago in the British Isles. This place is a very special home for the Gaelic language. In fact, the local council uses only the Gaelic name for the area.

Some parts are very flat and covered in peat. Other parts are very mountainous with lots of bare rock. Harris has high peaks like Clisham. The islands also have a huge amount of fresh water. There are more than 7,500 freshwater lochs in the area.

This is about one quarter of all the lochs in Scotland. Along the western coasts, you can find fertile sandy lands called machair. These are low areas made of dunes that are good for plants.

Many people lived on these islands a long time ago.

There are even older structures here than the first written stories from Roman times. For over 400 years, the islands were part of the Norse kingdom. In 1266, the islands were transferred to Scotland. After that, powerful clan chiefs like the MacLeods and MacDonalds held control.

Life was not always easy for the people living there. During the 19th century, the Highland Clearances had a very hard effect on many communities. It is only recently that the number of people living there has stopped going down.

Today, about 27,000 people live in the Outer Hebrides.

Most of the islands are not lived on by people. There are 19 inhabited islands, but over 50 islands have no people at all. Because the islands are separated by water, sea travel is very important.
