It sits in the north and west of the country. This area contains the northernmost mountain ranges on the island of Great Britain. The mountains are split into two main parts by a place called the Great Glen. One part is the Grampian Mountains to the southeast. The other part is the Northwest Highlands. These mountains are separated from the Hebrides islands by a body of water called the Minch.

Nature in the Highlands is very special and different from other places. It is the only area in the British Isles that has a taiga biome. This means it has large groups of Scots pine trees, often called the Caledonian Forest.

The land is often very steep and rocky. Because there are so many mountains, not many people live here today. In fact, it is one of the emptiest parts of Europe. In 2012, the population density was less than one seventh of the rest of Scotland.

Long ago, the history of the Highlands was shaped by different groups of people. The area was originally home to the Caledonians and the Picts. Later, it became a stronghold for the Hebridean Gaels. These people spoke a language called Scottish Gaelic.

The name for the Highlands in Gaelic means "the place of the Gaels." For a long time, the Highlands and the Lowlands had very different cultures. The Highlands were organized into social groups called clans. These clans were led by chiefs who looked after their people.

Life changed a lot for the people living in the Highlands during the 1800s. Between 1760 and 1850, many people were moved from their homes. This happened because landowners wanted to use the land for large sheep farms. This period is often called the Highland clearances.

Many people had to move to small areas called crofts to live. They often had to find work in fishing or the kelp industry to survive. Some people even had to leave Scotland entirely. They moved to far away places like Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.

Today, the Highlands are famous all over the world for their scenery and culture. Even though most people now speak English, the Gaelic influence is still very strong. Things like tartan and kilts became very popular symbols of Scotland.
