life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Highland cattle are a special breed from Scotland.

They are famous for their long, wide horns. They also have very long, wavy, and woolly coats. These cattle are very hardy. This means they can live in tough weather. They can survive in places with lots of rain and strong winds.

Because they are so tough, they can live in many different lands. They can even handle cold as cold as reindeer in the arctic.

The cattle stay warm using a double coat of hair.

The outer layer is made of oily hair. This is the longest hair of any cattle breed. The oil helps keep the animal dry when it rains. Underneath that is a soft, downy undercoat. This inner layer traps heat to keep them cozy. Most Highland cattle are reddish brown. About 22% are yellow, while others are black or silver.

Long ago, there were two different types. The Kyloe were small and often black. They lived on the Western Islands. People called them Kyloe because they swam them across narrow water paths. The mainland cattle were larger and often brown or red. In 1884, a breed society was started. They published the first herd-book in 1885. This book recorded both types as 'Highland' cattle.

Highland cattle live all over the world today.

They were sent to places like Canada, Australia, and the United States. In Canada, they were first brought in during the 1880s. In Australia, people started bringing them again in 1954. Today, there are over 1,000,000 Highland cattle worldwide. Most of them live in France and Finland. In the United Kingdom, the breed is actually considered at risk. This means there are not as many as there should be.

Knowing about these cattle helps us understand how they live together.

A group of these cattle is called a "fold." This name comes from old stone shelters used in winter. Inside a fold, the cattle have a clear social order. Older cattle are usually the leaders. This structure helps keep the group calm and reduces fighting. They can live a long time, sometimes up to 20 years. This is a longer life than many other types of cattle.
