Cattle are large, domesticated animals that belong to the bovid family.

People keep them as livestock for many different reasons. They provide meat, dairy products, and leather for humans to use. Some cattle even work as draft animals to pull carts or farm tools.

In some places, like parts of the Indian subcontinent, cattle are considered sacred. In these areas, it is actually illegal to kill them. There are over 1,000 recognized breeds of cattle in the world today.

By the year 2022, there were more than 940 million cattle living on Earth.

These animals have a very special way of eating called rumination.

They are ruminants, which means they have a stomach with four different parts. The first part is the rumen, which is the largest compartment. When cattle eat, they swallow grass without chewing it much at all. The food stays in the rumen for storage. Later, the cow brings the food back up to its mouth. This is called chewing the cud. The cow uses its molars to grind the coarse plants into small pieces. Tiny living things like bacteria and fungi in the stomach help break down the tough plants.

About 10,500 years ago, people in places like central Anatolia and the Levant began domesticating taurine cattle. These cattle came from wild animals called aurochs. A separate time of domestication happened in the Indian subcontinent to create zebu cattle. These different paths led to the many types of cattle we see now. Cattle were also one of the first animals to have a fully-mapped genome. This means scientists have studied their entire genetic code very closely.

Cattle have many interesting physical traits and behaviors.

Bulls are usually much larger than cows of the same breed. For example, a British Hereford bull can weigh 1,100 kg, while a cow weighs only 640 kg. Some breeds are even larger, like the Chianina, where a bull can reach 1,900 kg. Cattle have eyes on the sides of their heads to watch for danger. This gives them a wide view of 330 degrees. They also use their noses to smell if other animals are stressed.

They can even recognize the faces of humans and other cattle.

Learning about cattle helps us understand how animals live in groups.

They live in a dominance hierarchy, which is a social ranking. Older animals are usually more dominant than younger ones. Males are also usually more dominant than females. Cattle can even show different personalities, like being shy or social. They use sounds to tell each other about their age or status. Watching how they interact shows how much intelligence they truly have. Even a cow named Veronika showed she could use tools to scratch herself.
