This work is a part of animal husbandry. Farmers use sheep for many important things. They provide soft wool for clothing and fiber. They also provide milk and meat like lamb or mutton. Some sheep even give us sheepskin and parchment.

Because they are useful, sheep are raised all over the world.

To run a farm, people must build many special things. Farmers make fences and housing to keep sheep safe. They also build shearing sheds to remove wool. They must provide water, feed, and ways to stop pests. Most sheep graze on green pastures to eat. A shepherd or a sheep dog might guide them.

Sometimes, farmers give them extra food like corn or hay.

Raising sheep involves many careful steps for the animals. A female sheep is called a ewe. When a ewe is ready, she mates with a male. Most lambs are born outside in the fields. After birth, farmers use lamb marking to identify them. This can include ear tags or earmarks. They might also do tail docking to keep them healthy.

Many different countries have large numbers of sheep. In 2013, mainland China had 175 million sheep. Australia had 75.5 million sheep at that time. India had 53.8 million, and the former Sudan had 52.5 million. Iran also had 50.2 million sheep in 2013. In the United States, sheep numbers were very high in 1884. There were 51 million sheep in the U.S. then. Now, there are only about 6 million sheep left there.

Sheep farming connects to many parts of our lives. The wool from sheep becomes the clothes we wear. The meat provides food for many people every year. About 540 million sheep are slaughtered for meat each year. Some farmers even use sheep to help with solar power. In the U.S., over 100,000 sheep graze under solar panels. This is a way to use the land for two things at once.
