People use these animals for many different things. They provide meat like pork, bacon, ham, and gammon. Their skins are used to make clothing. Even their fat is used for medicine and cosmetics.

This work is a part of animal husbandry. It is a very large global industry. More than one billion pigs are butchered every year. In the United States alone, 100 million pigs are butchered annually.

There are several ways to manage a pig farm. Some use intensive commercial units with large numbers of pigs. These pigs often live in climate-controlled buildings. Other farmers use free range or extensive farming styles. In these styles, pigs might wander around a town. They might also live in a simple pen outside a house. Historically, pigs were kept in small numbers near a home. They were valued for turning food waste into meat and manure.

How a person treats a pig matters a lot. The way a handler acts affects the animal's welfare. Pigs are very curious animals. They respond well to slow and deliberate movements. They also like verbal interaction and being patted on the back. However, fast movements can cause fear and stress. Negative actions like hitting or using electric tools cause stress. This stress can lead to sickness or slower growth.

Keeping pigs calm helps them grow better and stay healthy.

Many countries trade pigs across the world. China is a very important part of this trade. China consumes about 50 percent of the global pork production. In 2021, the total pork consumed in China was 57 million tons. Because they eat so much, China is a net importer. This means they buy more pigs than they grow. The United States, Canada, and the European Union are the largest exporters. For example, Canada exported over half of its 22.8 million pigs in 2008.

Farming pigs also has effects on the environment and people. Waste from large farms can carry bacteria and heavy metals. This waste can sometimes reach groundwater or nearby water. This can cause problems like harmful algal blooms. People living near large farms might feel sick. They may have headaches, nausea, or trouble breathing. This is often due to fumes or air particles from the waste.
