Pigs are amazing, clever animals that have lived alongside humans for a very long time. They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and meat to stay healthy.

Most people know them as farm animals raised for meat, which is called pork. Their skin can also be used to make leather.

While many are raised on farms, some people even keep small pigs as pets.

They are truly important animals in many different cultures around the world.

A pig's body is built for exploring the ground. They have a large head and a long snout. This snout has a special bone and a disk of cartilage at the tip.

They use this snout to dig into the soil to find food. Their snout is also a very sensitive organ for smelling. An adult pig has 44 teeth in total. Their back teeth are strong and made for crushing food. In males, the canine teeth can grow into tusks.

These tusks grow all the time and stay sharp by grinding together.

Pigs have a very interesting history with humans. They were domesticated twice during the Neolithic period. This happened in the Near East around the Tigris Basin and also in China.

In the Near East, pigs arrived in Europe at least 8,500 years ago. Once they arrived, they interbred with the wild boar living in Europe. Even after this, they kept their special domesticated features. Some scientists say pigs are a separate species, while others say they are part of the wild boar species.

There are many interesting facts about how pigs live and grow. Around 1.5 billion pigs are raised every year across the globe. China is the largest producer of pork in the world.

Adult pigs usually weigh between 100 and 350 kilograms. However, a pig named Big Bill once weighed 476 kilograms! Pigs are also very special because they have a mutation that protects them from snake venom. This is a trait they share with mongooses and honey badgers.

Pigs have unique ways of staying comfortable and safe. They do not sweat as well as humans do. To stay cool, they often wallow in mud or water. This helps them lose heat through a process called evaporative cooling.

Mother pigs, called sows, are also great builders. Before giving birth, a sow will build a nest out of twigs and leaves. She makes a mound to keep her piglets warm and protected from the weather.

This careful nesting helps the new piglets stay safe and close to their mother.
