The babirusa is a very unusual animal.

People sometimes call them deer-pigs. They live on several Indonesian islands. These islands include Sulawesi, Togian, Sula, and Buru. Scientists used to think they were all one kind. In 2002, experts split them into several different species. Now, the Buru babirusa lives on Buru and the Sula Islands. The most famous one is the North Sulawesi babirusa.

Scientists tell these species apart by their size. They also look at hair, tails, and skull shapes.

Male babirusas have amazing teeth called canines. These teeth grow in a very strange way. The upper canines come out of the snout. They pierce the skin and curve back toward the forehead.

The lower canines also grow upwards. In some species, the top tusks are short and thin. In the North Sulawesi babirusa, they are long and thick. Females usually have very small teeth or none at all. Males must use their tusks to keep them from growing too long. If they do not, the teeth might hit their own skull.

These animals have a busy life in the wild.

Most babirusas live in tropical rainforests near rivers. They are active during the daytime. They are omnivores, so they eat many different things. They eat leaves, roots, and fruit. Their strong jaws can even crack hard nuts.

They do not dig with their noses like most pigs. This is because they lack a certain bone in their snout. Instead, they only dig in mud or swampy ground.

Humans have noticed babirusas for a very long time.

Very old cave paintings in Sulawesi are 35,400 years old. These paintings show babirusas from the Ice Age. In Indonesia, their strange looks have inspired demonic masks. You can see painted babirusas on ceilings in old palaces. There is even a debate about whether they are kosher. Some scholars wonder if they chew their cud like other animals. This is important for certain religious dietary laws.

Today, the babirusa faces many hard jobs to stay safe. All species are listed as threatened by the IUCN. This means they are at risk of disappearing. Poaching is one big problem for them. Also, people cut down the forests where they live. This is called habitat loss. When the trees go away, the animals have no cover. This makes it easier for hunters to find them. We must protect their forest homes to help them.
