The aurochs was a huge wild ox that lived a long time ago.

It is the wild ancestor of the cattle we see on farms today. These animals were very large herbivores. Bulls could reach a shoulder height of 180 centimeters. Cows were a bit smaller, reaching up to 150 centimeters. They were famous for their massive, long horns. These horns could grow to be 2.5 meters long.

The aurochs was a very important part of the ancient world.

How did the aurochs live and move? Scientists think they may have started in Asia. During warm periods, they moved west and north into new lands. They lived in many places, from Europe to North Africa and East Asia.

Their bodies were built for movement and strength. Bulls had very thick necks and strong shoulders. Their legs were long and slender compared to modern cows. This helped them move across the wide grasslands of the past.

Humans and aurochs have a very long history together. Ancient people, including Neanderthals, lived alongside them. You can see aurochs in old cave paintings and Egyptian art.

In the ancient Near East, these animals stood for power. People even used their large horns as drinking cups or trophies. During the Neolithic Revolution, humans began to domesticate them. One group became the taurine cattle in Europe. Another group in India became the zebu cattle.

We know much about them thanks to fossils and old records. The oldest well-dated fossil was found in Tunisia. Scientists like Ludwig Heinrich Bojanus helped describe them in 1825. He showed how they were different from farm cattle.

The aurochs lived in different groups called subspecies. There were Eurasian, Indian, and North African aurochs. Some lived on islands like Sicily and Kythira. These island animals were much smaller than the ones on the mainland.

Even though the aurochs is extinct, we can still see them. They disappeared because of hunting and losing their homes. The very last ones were found in Bulgaria in the 1700s.

You can still see their traits in some modern cows. Some cows have the same dark color as the bulls. Others have a light stripe down their backs. Some cows even have horns that look just like aurochs horns.
