The cave hyena was a powerful hunter from the past.

These animals lived in Eurasia during the Pleistocene epoch. This was a time of many ice ages. They were top predators in their lands. This means they were at the very top of the food chain. They lived alongside many other animals, including cave lions.

They were very important to their environment.

These hyenas worked in groups called clans. They were active hunters rather than just scavengers. They often hunted large animals like wild horses and steppe bison. They also ate animals like reindeer, red deer, and wild boar. Sometimes they found huge animals like woolly mammoths or woolly rhinoceroses. They would crack open bones to eat the marrow inside.

This helped them get all the energy they needed.

Scientists have studied how these animals lived for a long time. Many fossils were found in caves and sinkholes across Europe and Asia. These bones show us how they behaved. We know they lived in groups because of how the bones were found together. Some people thought they were just a type of spotted hyena. However, DNA shows they were different. They split from African hyenas over 1 million years ago.

Cave hyenas were much bigger than the spotted hyenas we see today. A study in 2017 said they were about 60% heavier. Their bones were also thicker and shorter. They had large, long brains. Their size changed depending on how cold the weather was. In cold places, they grew even larger bodies. This is a rule in nature called Bergmann's rule.

They lived in many places, from Britain to China.

These animals shared the world with early humans and Neanderthals. Some cave art even shows what they looked like. The art suggests they had spotted fur, just like modern spotted hyenas. They may have even fought with cave lions over food. We do not know exactly why they disappeared. It might have been due to climate change. It could also be because of human activity or fewer animals to eat.
