Zebu are a special kind of cattle from South Asia.

They are very different from the cows you might see in cooler places. Most zebu have a fatty hump on their shoulders. They also have a large dewlap, which is a fold of skin under their neck. Their ears sometimes droop down low.

These features help them live in hot, tropical places. They can handle bright sun and dry weather very well. This makes them perfect for living in the savanna or steppe environments.

These animals work in many ways to help people. Some zebu are used as draught animals to pull heavy carts.

Others are raised for beef or for milk. People also use their hides and even their dung for fuel. In some places, tiny versions called miniature zebu are kept as pets. In Madagascar, zebu are so important that there are 6,813 local sayings about them. In India, they are very special to the Hindu religion and are treated with great respect.

Scientists have studied zebu for a long time to learn their history. Carl Linnaeus gave them scientific names in 1758. Later, Juliet Clutton-Brock named them a distinct species in 1999. Other experts like Colin Groves and Peter Grubb had different ideas about their classification. In 2011, Groves and Grubb named them a distinct species once again. This shows that learning about living things is an ongoing job for scientists.

Zebu likely came from a wild animal called the Indian aurochs.

These cattle were first raised between 6,000 and 7,000 years ago. This happened in places like Mehrgarh in present-day Pakistan. They also moved to South India and Gujarat. There are about 75 different breeds of zebu known today. These breeds are split almost evenly between those in Africa and those in India.

Zebu are found all over the world now. They are very common in countries like India, Nepal, and China. In Brazil, they became very important in the early 20th century. More than 80% of beef cattle in Brazil are now zebu or hybrids.

These animals are much like the cattle you see on farms today. However, their special bodies allow them to thrive where other cows might struggle. They show us how animals can adapt to their environment.
