They come from a village called Vechoor in Kerala, India. These animals are famous for being quite small. The Guinness Book of Records says they are the smallest cattle breed in the world. They are useful because they make a good amount of milk. They do not need much food to stay healthy. This makes them very helpful for farmers.

These cows work in a very efficient way.

An average cow is about 87 cm tall. They usually weigh around 130 kg. They can give up to 3 litres of milk every day. This milk has very small fat parts. Because of this, the milk is easy to digest. It also has a lot of special proteins. One protein is called lactoferrin, which helps fight germs.

These cows almost disappeared a long time ago. They were popular in Kerala until the 1960s. Then, people started mixing them with other types of cows. This made the Vechur breed very rare. A professor named Sosamma Iype helped save them. She worked with her students to protect the animals.

They started a conservation unit in 1989. A trust was also formed in 1998 to help.

Today, there are only about 200 Vechur cows left.

This is a very small number. Nearly 100 of these cows live at a Veterinary College. In the year 2000, the FAO put them on a special list. This list is for animals that might go extinct. The list is called the World Watch List of Domestic Animal Diversity. It shows that the breed needs careful help to survive.

Many people use Vechur products for health.

They make a special butter called ghee from the milk. This ghee is made by clarifying the butter. It is good for people who are getting well from being sick. The milk also has a type of protein called A2 beta-casein. This is different from the A1 type found in other cows. Many people believe this milk has many medicinal qualities.
