American Brahman

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The American Brahman is a special kind of beef cattle. It is a hybrid, which means it is a mix of two different types of cattle. This breed was made in the United States. It was created to help farmers in hot places. These cattle are very good at living in the heat. They can also handle bright sunlight and humid air. They are also good at staying healthy even when food is poor.

This breed works by combining the best traits of different animals. Breeders used cattle from India and Brazil to start. They used stock like the Gir, Guzerá, and Nelore. They also used Indu-Brasil, Krishna Valley, and Ongole cattle. These animals were mixed with local cows in the United States. This way, the new cattle could resist parasites and bugs. This mix helps them thrive in tropical areas.

People began this work in the United States in 1885. In that year, two grey bulls came from India to Texas. One bull was very large and weighed over 2,000 pounds. The other bull was much smaller. Other Indian cattle arrived in Texas up to 1906. Some of these animals were even used in circuses. Later, in 1924, many more cattle came from Brazil through Mexico.

Many people now keep these cattle around the world. They are found in fifty-five different countries. There are more than 1.8 million Brahman cattle on Earth. In Australia, they are the most common breed of cattle. By 1987, there were over one million in Queensland alone. Many countries have huge groups of them. For example, Argentina, Mexico, and South Africa each have over 100,000.

Farmers use the Brahman mostly for the meat industry. Because their meat is different from European cattle, people often mix them. This creates new, strong breeds. One mix is the Brangus, which is a Brahman and Angus mix. Another is the Brahmousin, a mix of Brahman and Limousin. There are also Simbrah and Braford cattle. These mixes help farmers get the best meat and the best strength.
