This breed is very useful for farmers. People call it a dual-purpose bird. This means it is raised for meat and for eggs. It is a very hardy bird. It can handle cold weather quite well. These chickens are also known for being good sitters.

This bird has many distinct parts. It has a single comb on its head with five points. The comb, the wattles, and the ear-lobes are all bright red. Its beak can be yellow or horn-colored. The bird has a long, broad back and a deep breast. Its legs are yellow and have no feathers.

History shows how this breed was made. In 1849, the chicken was first shown in Boston. Later, in 1869, a man named D.A. Upham helped shape the breed. He lived in Worcester, Massachusetts. He crossed Black Java hens with a striped cock. He wanted birds with barred plumage. He also wanted birds with clean, featherless legs.

There are many different colors of this chicken. In the United States, there are seven recognized varieties. These include barred, blue, buff, Columbian, partridge, silver-penciled, and white. The barred pattern was the original one. The Poultry Club of Great Britain recognizes five types. These are barred, black, buff, Columbian, and white.

These chickens are very productive. One hen lays about 200 brown eggs each year. These eggs weigh about 50 grams. For a long time, this was the most common chicken in the United States. It stayed that way until World War II. Today, the breed is listed as recovering. This means there are new registrations every year.
