Silkie

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Silkie is a very special kind of chicken. Many people call it the Chinese silk chicken. It is famous for its soft, fluffy feathers. These feathers feel like silk or even fur. This happens because the feathers lack barbicels. Barbicels are tiny parts that usually hold feathers together. Without them, the feathers stay loose and soft. Because of this, Silkies are unable to fly.

They are popular as pets or ornamental birds today.

These birds have many unique features to notice. Most Silkies have black or bluish skin. Their bones and meat are also dark. This is caused by a rare trait called fibromelanosis. This trait makes the dark color spread into the connective tissue. Silkies also have blue earlobes and a small walnut-shaped comb. Most chickens have only four toes on each foot. However, Silkies have five toes. This is called polydactyly.

This extra digit comes from a change in their genes.

We do not know exactly when Silkies first appeared. Most records point to ancient China as their home. Some people think they may have come from Southeast Asia. Travelers like Marco Polo wrote about furry chickens in the 13th century. Later, a writer named Ulisse Aldrovandi wrote about them in 1598. He described them as chickens clothed with hair like a black cat. Silkies likely traveled to the West through trade paths.

They were officially recognized in North America in 1874.

Silkies come in many different colors and styles. Some have a beard, which is a puff of feathers under the beak. The Entente Européenne recognizes ten plumage colors. The American Poultry Association recognizes seven colors. These include black, blue, white, and grey. Other colors like lavender and buff are also used for shows. In the United States, most Silkies are bantam sized. Bantams are much smaller than regular chickens.

In Europe, they also recognize larger versions of the breed.

Silkie hens are very good at certain jobs. They have a strong tendency to be broody. Being broody means they want to sit on eggs to hatch them. Because they spend so much time sitting, they lay fewer eggs. A Silkie hen might lay 100 eggs in a good year. People use them to hatch eggs from other birds. They can raise babies from ducks, geese, or even quail.

This makes them very helpful to other poultry keepers.
