Chinchilla rabbits are a special group of three rabbit breeds.

Their name comes from their soft fur. This fur looks just like the coat of a chinchilla. However, these rabbits are not related to chinchillas at all. Chinchillas are a type of rodent. Rabbits are actually lagomorphs. A mutation changed how their hair looks. This mutation diluted the yellow pigment in the hair. The pigment became almost white. This turned the wild agouti color into a chinchilla color.

There are three main breeds of these rabbits. The first is the Standard Chinchilla. It is the original version of the breed. It has a compact body and rollback fur. The second breed is the American Chinchilla. People also call it the Heavyweight Chinchilla. It has a larger, commercial body type. The third breed is the Giant Chinchilla.

This breed comes from the United States. It was made by crossing Chinchillas with Flemish Giants. This giant breed is used for meat.

History tells us where these rabbits began. The Chinchilla rabbits first came from France. A person named M. J. Dybowski bred them to a standard. These rabbits arrived in the United States in 1919. The American Chinchilla breed was made later. People bred large Standard Chinchillas to make them bigger. They wanted a meatier rabbit. This is how the American Chinchilla was born.

American Chinchilla rabbits have many specific facts. They are very stocky and hardy.

Adult males, or bucks, weigh 9 to 11 pounds. Adult females, or does, weigh 10 to 12 pounds. These rabbits have bodies with a slight curve. This curve goes from the neck to the rump. They also carry their ears straight up. They are good breeders too. A mother usually has a litter of 6 to 9 kits.

These rabbits are very important to protect today. The American Chinchilla is a very rare breed. The Livestock Conservancy calls it critically endangered. This means there are very few left.

You can keep them as pets. They do not need regular grooming. Some people also show them in shows. In these shows, they are divided into six classes. A rabbit is a 6-class breed if it grows over 9 pounds. This helps people track their growth and size.
