People often call them the "Gentle Giant" because of their calm nature. They are also called the "universal rabbit" because they serve many roles. Some people keep them as pets in their homes. Others raise them for meat or for their fur. They are very popular at rabbit shows today.

Their huge size and many colors make them stand out.

These rabbits have a very interesting way they were made. They likely came from several different meat and fur breeds. One possible ancestor was the Patagonian breed from Belgium and France. This Patagonian rabbit is not the same as wild rabbits from Argentina. Scientists say they might also come from the "Stone Rabbit" breed.

This name comes from an old Belgian weight called a stone. Breeding these different types helped create the large rabbit we see now.

We have many records about the history of this breed. People may have bred them near Ghent, Belgium, in the 1500s. The first real record of the breed appeared around the year 1860. A veterinarian named Oscar Nisbett helped breed them during that time. Later, Albert van Heuverzwijn wrote the first breed standards in 1893.

This helped people know exactly how the rabbits should look.

Flemish Giants have many specific traits and facts. They can be found in seven different colors. These colors are black, blue, fawn, sandy, light gray, steel gray, and white.

In the 1890s, they were brought to America to make meat rabbits larger. The National Federation of Flemish Giant Rabbit Breeders was formed in 1915. This group helps promote the breed to people everywhere. They are the second-oldest domestic rabbit breed in the United States.

Many people find these rabbits very easy to live with. They are docile, which means they are calm and easy to handle.

Because they are calm, 4-H programs use them to teach children. These programs help kids learn how to be responsible for animals. One famous rabbit named Alex the Great was even a therapy animal. He was trained to help people feel better through his gentle nature.
