life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Simmental cattle are a very special kind of cow from Switzerland.

They are known as dual-purpose cattle. This means farmers use them for both milk and meat. They can also be used as draught animals to help with farm work. These cows are quite famous for how fast their young grow. If they have enough food, they grow very quickly. They provide more milk and weight than almost any other breed.

There are many ways these cows look. Their colors can change from a pale yellow-gold to a very dark red.

Many have white markings on their bodies. Most Simmentals have a white face. This white face is a special trait that usually passes to their babies. In places like Namibia and South Africa, they only register cows with specific colors. These must be red or brown with white on the forehead and lower legs.

The history of this breed goes back to the Middle Ages. They come from the Simmental, which is a valley near the Simme river.

Because they are so useful, they helped create other famous breeds. These include the Montbéliarde in France and the Pezzata Rossa in Italy. The breed spread to many places around the world. For example, they arrived in Namibia in 1893 and South Africa in 1905. In these places, they are often called Simmentaler.

Simmentals have lived in many different countries for a long time. They arrived in Russia by the year 1850. During the time of the Soviet Union, they were very popular. In 1980, there were between 12 and 17 million Simmental cattle in that country. Many special types were made there, like the Steppe Simmental. However, the number of these cows dropped a lot after 1991. In 1990, there were about 13 million, but by 2023, there were only 86,000 left in Russia.

You can think of the Simmental as a very flexible worker. Some types are made mostly for milk, like the Swiss Fleckvieh.

Other types are made mostly for meat, like the extreme beef type. Some are a perfect mix of both. This flexibility is why they are popular in so many places. You can find them in the USA, Canada, Brazil, and even Australia. They are one of the most widely distributed breeds in the world.
