Breed

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A breed is a special group of domestic animals. These animals look the same and act in similar ways. This shared look is called a phenotype. Scientists do not have just one definition for a breed. Instead, breeders use the term to group animals together. They agree on which qualities make an animal part of a group.

This helps people organize different types of living things. It is a very important idea in farming and animal care.

Breeds form through a few different ways. Sometimes animals change to fit their environment naturally. Other times, people use selective breeding to help them change. Selective breeding is when a person picks specific animals to mate. They want to pass on the best traits to the babies. This process is how new groups are made.

If the babies look like their parents, we say they are breeding true. This is a key part of being a real breed.

People who make breeds are called breeders. They start with a group called foundation stock. These are the first animals used to build the breed. Breeders use a written list called a breed standard. This list describes the best traits for the group. It also lists traits that are not wanted.

A breeder must avoid genetic defects or faults. They also try to keep a large number of animals. This helps the breed stay strong without forced inbreeding.

There are many different kinds of animal breeds. You can find many breeds of cats, dogs, and cows. There are even breeds of insects and birds. For example, some people study different types of honeybees.

Some breeds are only found in one country. We call these native breeds. If you mix two different breeds, the babies are crossbreeds. If you mix even more different types, you get a hybrid.

Think about the different dogs you might see. A small dog and a large dog are different breeds. They have different traits that they pass to their puppies.

Plants have these groups too, but we call them cultivars. Just like dogs, these plants have specific traits. This helps farmers know what to expect from their animals or crops. It makes the world of farming much more organized.
