A hybrid is a living thing made from two different parents.

These parents might belong to different varieties or even different species. Most hybrids carry genetic material from both parents in every cell. This can lead to interesting results like hybrid vigor. Hybrid vigor is when a hybrid grows larger or taller than its parents.

Some hybrids also show a mix of traits. A flower might be pink if one parent was red and the other was white.

A bird might have a yellow head from one parent and an orange belly from another.

How these hybrids form depends on how the parents interact. Often, the offspring shows traits that are right in the middle of the parents. However, some hybrids combine specific features from each side. In plants, a special thing called hybrid speciation can happen. This occurs when the number of chromosomes, or life instructions, doubles.

This doubling makes the new plant unable to breed with its original parents. This process can create an entirely new species. This is a very important way that many plants evolved over time.

Humans have worked with hybrids for a long time. We often cross wild plants or animals with ones that are domesticated. This helps us create better fruits, flowers, and trees for farming. In the 1920s, people began using special names for famous hybrids. They used portmanteau words, which are names made by joining two words together.

For example, a cross between a lion and a tiger is called a liger. A cross between a tiger and a lion is called a tigon. Other examples include the cama, the pumapard, and the wholphin.

Science shows us that hybridization is a natural part of life. About 25% of all plants and 10% of all animals form hybrids.

Some hybrids can even act as a bridge between species. They can carry helpful genes from one group to another. This is called introgression. In the past, humans also interbred with other groups. For instance, Neanderthals and modern humans lived together 40,000 years ago.

This shows that hybridization has shaped the history of life on Earth.

We see the idea of hybrids in many places today. Some people worry about genetic pollution from human activity. This happens when introduced species breed with local ones. However, some scientists think hybridization can actually help save rare species. It can add new genetic diversity to a small group. This helps them adapt to a changing world. We also see hybrids in old stories and myths.

Myths tell of creatures like the Minotaur or the sphinx.
